Are you ready to kickstart your career as a Data Scientist?
Join 1 or all of our 4 hands-on Data Science Essentials modules, the next edition will start in October 2021. You will learn the key concepts of working with data and analytics techniques and grow the skills to efficiently run data science projects, answering your organization’s key questions.

Why join the course Data Science Essentials?

What will you learn?

The goal of the course is to teach participants the practical and hands-on skills to conduct data science projects. We mainly focus on the practical and ‘hard’ skills like programming, statistics and machine learning, but will pay attention to the necessary soft skills as well. You will learn the key concepts for working with data and analytics techniques and grow the skills to efficiently run data science projects to answer the key questions of your business.

  • the ability to handle structured and unstructured data;
  • insights in judging the quality of data;
  • skills to perform analysis on data;
  • skills to report the results with clear visuals and storytelling.

For whom?

This course is for business professionals who perform analyses of any form on data on a daily basis. The content is especially tailored to people who seek to get more from their data. A technical background or profound affinity is a prerequisite, since you will be learning a programming language and will be developing competences in advanced statistics. If you are not sure if your background fits the course, please contact us via Executive-Education@uva.nl.

Curriculum

  • Module 1: Performing Data Analytics in Python
    Python is a very popular programming language in data science. The goal of this module is to learn Python programming skills and SQL basics to apply in data science projects. In this module, you will develop the practical and ‘hard’ skills for working with data and you will learn all about the practical and hands-on foundational skills to conduct data science projects. Unfortunately, data is often not handed to you on a silver platter; it can be incomplete, noisy, or inconsistent. You will learn the key concepts for working with data and analytics techniques. How to get to know the data you are working with, how to improve the quality of the data, and use it to create insights through visualizations.
  • Module 2: Applied Machine Learning
    This module will provide you practical and hands-on modelling skills to conduct data science projects applying machine learning. We will introduce and apply different algorithms and evaluate and improve model performance. Python programming skills are required before you start this module.
  • Module 3: Applied Optimization
    The goal of this module is to learn practical and hands-on modelling skills to conduct data science projects for optimization problems. You will learn the key concepts for recognizing and modelling optimization problems. Python programming skills are required before you start this module.
  • Module 4: Business and Soft Skills
    In module 4, you will get to know more about the practical and hands-on business skills to conduct data science projects. You will learn how to create business value by using your new skills to efficiently run data science projects to answer the key questions of your business. We will also address the key concepts and techniques for visualizing data and storytelling.
